Nafpaktos – from Athens to Nafpaktos by Best Athens Tours
Nafpaktos is a seaside town of Aitoloakarnania in the Corinthian Gulf. Built between Antirrio and the estuary of the Mornos River, it is one of the oldest Greek cities that experienced periods of great prosperity and was associated with important historical events. This is confirmed by its perfect fortification, which starts from the port, continues with three successive walls and ends up in the castle. It has been characterized as a traditional settlement.
It was an important city of Byzantium, as it was a port of travelers to Italy and Constantinople. It was in the province of Greece or Achaia. Its fortress was radically repaired in the years of Justinian, but the city was destroyed by an earthquake. Also, disasters suffered from raids by various peoples, such as the Slavs. Generally, the city changed the hands of conquerors like the Franks, the Venetians with the last Ottomans. Nafpaktos took part in the Greek Revolution, where they were struggling to get the Turks out of the city in a tough battle by sieging the city’s harbor.
The well-preserved castle that dominates the hillside with the pine forest behind the city, the Venetian harbor, the traditional downtown houses and its paved paths, the Pharma Museum of the 1821 national liberation struggle are some of the most remarkable points to be visit.
